Common questions

Heat pump FAQs

The cost of a heat pump varies depending on your home, system design and any upgrades required (such as radiators or insulation). As a rough guide, most systems fall between £3,500 and £10,000 after the £7,500 grant, but this can vary depending on the property. We start with a free online estimate, then carry out a full design consultation to give you an accurate fixed price.
Most homes can be suitable for a heat pump — including older properties. The key factor isn’t the age of the property, it’s how the system is designed. A properly designed heat pump system will work efficiently and heat your home correctly, regardless of when it was built. This is why we carry out a detailed design consultation before any installation — to ensure the system is right for your home.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant providing £7,500 towards the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump. It’s available to owner-occupiers and landlords in England and Wales replacing a fossil fuel heating system. As an MCS-certified installer, we apply for the grant on your behalf and deduct it directly from your installation price — you never have to claim it yourself.

Not always. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers (typically 45–55°C vs 70–80°C), which means larger radiators may be needed in some rooms. Modern homes built after the 2000s often don’t need any radiator changes. Older homes sometimes need a few upgrades in the larger rooms. We assess this as part of the heat loss calculation and include any required radiator upgrades in your quote.

Modern air source heat pumps are much quieter than older models — typically around 40–50dB at 1 metre, similar to a quiet conversation or a refrigerator. Most homeowners find them completely unnoticeable after a few days. We position the outdoor unit carefully to minimise any impact on you or your neighbours, and can advise on planning permission requirements if needed.

It depends on what you’re replacing and how well insulated your home is. A well-sized heat pump in a well-insulated home replacing an old oil or LPG boiler can save several hundred pounds a year. Replacing a modern efficient gas boiler, savings are typically smaller in the short term — but electricity prices are expected to fall relative to gas over the coming years, improving the economics further. We’ll give you an honest estimate during your survey.

Being a Heat Geek verified installer means we follow a design-led approach to heat pumps, focusing on performance, efficiency and real-world results — not just installation. Heat Geek training goes beyond standard industry practices, teaching advanced system design, correct sizing and optimisation. This ensures your heat pump is set up properly and runs efficiently long-term. In simple terms — it means your system is designed to work properly, not just fitted and left.
