What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Support for eligible low-carbon heating upgrades
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government scheme administered by Ofgem on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It provides eligible property owners with a grant towards installing a heat pump or biomass boiler.
The scheme does not fund a new gas, oil or LPG boiler. It is designed to help eligible properties switch from existing fossil fuel or electric heating to eligible low-carbon heating systems.
The grant is not paid directly to you. An MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf and deducts the grant from the installation price. Ofgem then contacts you to confirm your consent, which must normally be provided within 14 calendar days.

Eligibility
Is your home likely to qualify?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available for eligible properties in England and Wales. Your property and proposed heating system must meet the scheme requirements.
- Your property is in England or Wales
- You own the property, or are a landlord/small business applying on an eligible basis
- Your current heating is a fossil fuel boiler (gas, oil, LPG) or standard electric heating
- Your installer is MCS-certified and a member of an approved consumer code (e.g. RECC or HIES)
- New-build properties are not eligible, other than certain qualifying self-builds
- Properties already heated by a low-carbon system don't qualify for a further grant
- Social housing is not eligible under this scheme
- The grant cannot be used towards a new fossil fuel boiler of any kind

Boiler Upgrade Scheme FAQs
Can I use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for a new gas boiler?
No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme supports eligible low-carbon heating systems, including heat pumps and certain biomass boilers. It cannot be used towards a new gas, oil or LPG boiler.
How much can I get towards a heat pump?
The standard grant is £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water or ground-source heat pump. A £2,500 grant is available for eligible air-to-air heat pumps. Certain off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG heating can receive £9,000 towards an eligible air-to-water or ground-source heat pump until 31 March 2027.
Is the £9,000 grant available to everyone?
No. The £9,000 grant is specifically for eligible off-gas-grid properties where oil or LPG heating is being replaced with an eligible air-to-water or ground-source heat pump.
Is the grant paid directly to me?
No. The grant is applied as an upfront discount to the installation cost. Your eligible installer applies for the grant and reflects it in your quote and invoice.
Can I get BUS if I already have a heat pump?
No. The scheme cannot be used to replace an existing low-carbon heating system.
Can I get BUS if I have a gas boiler?
Potentially, yes. Having a gas boiler does not by itself prevent you from applying. The key requirement is that the proposed eligible low-carbon heating system and property meet the BUS requirements. The grant is for the new heat pump installation, not for replacing your gas boiler with another gas boiler.
